Pisa

Probably founded by the Etruscans, Pisa was well to the fore during the Middle Ages as one of Italy's maritime republics. Its fleet both kept the Arabs at bay and traded far and wide, especially with the Levant.

The city's enchantments are concentrated on the Piazza dei Miracoli: the Baptistery with its hundreds of marble statues, the Cathedral, a Romanesque masterpiece handed down virtually unchanged along the centuries, and the elegant Leaning Tower. You'll undoubtedly want to climb to the top, while the classic snapshot of yourself as you help to prop it up will certainly remain as the most memorable moment of your visit to Pisa!

And, close to Pisa, many alternative and pleasant places, such as the Five Lands, in Liguria region, or the Elba Island, Lucca and Montecatini Terme in Tuscany.
